Jay Rock, born Johnny Reed McKinzie Jr. on March 31, 1986, is an American rapper and a founding member of the hip-hop collective Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). Hailing from Watts, Los Angeles, Jay Rock has been a pivotal figure in the West Coast rap scene, known for his gritty storytelling and street-oriented lyrics.
Jay Rock gained recognition with his mixtapes, including "Watts Finest, Vol. 1" (2006) and "Black Friday" (2010). His breakthrough moment came with the release of the single "All My Life (In the Ghetto)" in 2008, which featured Lil Wayne and became a regional hit. The track's success helped Jay Rock secure a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records.
In 2011, Jay Rock released his debut studio album, "Follow Me Home," which featured collaborations with artists like Kendrick Lamar and Tech N9ne. The album showcased Jay Rock's lyricism and his ability to navigate a variety of sounds within hip-hop.
