EPMD, which stands for "Erick and Parrish Making Dollars," is an American hip-hop duo consisting of members Erick Sermon (born November 25, 1968) and Parrish "PMD" Smith (born May 13, 1968). Formed in Brentwood, New York, in 1987, EPMD is widely regarded as one of the foundational acts in East Coast hip-hop, known for their innovative production, business acumen, and impactful contributions to the genre.
Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith met while attending high school and began their musical collaboration in the late 1980s. In 1987, they released their debut album, "Strictly Business," which immediately garnered attention for its sample-heavy production and the duo's charismatic and complementary rhyme styles. The album included hits like "You Gots to Chill" and the title track "Strictly Business."
EPMD's distinctive sound was characterized by funky, bass-heavy beats, and they became known for their use of samples from classic funk and soul records. Erick Sermon's production skills, often involving intricate sampling and loop arrangements, contributed significantly to the duo's sonic identity.
The duo continued to achieve success with subsequent albums, including "Unfinished Business" (1989), "Business as Usual" (1990), and "Business Never Personal" (1992). Notable tracks from these albums include "So Wat Cha Sayin'," "Gold Digger," and "Crossover."
In addition to their musical contributions, EPMD was known for their business savvy. They were among the first hip-hop artists to establish their own record label, Def Jam imprint, named Def Squad, and released albums under their management.
