
BIOGRAPHY
Above the Law was formed in Pomona, California, in 1989. The original members included Cold 187um (Gregory Hutchinson), KMG the Illustrator (Kevin Michael Gulley), Go Mack (Arthur Goodman), and DJ Total K-Oss (Anthony Stewart). Their name was inspired by a film of the same name, reflecting their desire to push the boundaries of conventional rap.
In 1989, Above the Law signed with Ruthless Records, a label founded by N.W.A member Eazy-E. Their debut album, "Livin' Like Hustlers," was released in 1990 and showcased a unique blend of West Coast gangsta rap with funk and G-funk elements. The album featured collaborations with Dr. Dre and Laylaw, contributing to its distinctive sound.
Above the Law's sophomore album, "Black Mafia Life" (1993), continued their exploration of West Coast gangsta rap and G-funk. The album included the hit single "Black Superman" and solidified their status within the hip-hop community.
The group faced challenges and lineup changes in the following years, with Cold 187um being the consistent figure. Above the Law continued to release music, with notable albums such as "Uncle Sam's Curse" (1994) and "Time Will Reveal" (1996).
Above the Law's contributions to the West Coast rap scene include their incorporation of live instrumentation and a diverse musical palette. They were known for addressing social and political issues in their lyrics, distinguishing them from other gangsta rap acts of the time.
Despite facing challenges and lineup changes, Above the Law remained active in the music industry, and Cold 187um continued to release solo projects.
