2 Live Crew was formed in Miami, Florida, in 1984, by Luther "Luke" Campbell. The original lineup included Fresh Kid Ice (Christopher Wong Won), Mr. Mixx (David Hobbs), and Amazing V (Yuri Vielot). Their early music was characterized by Miami bass, a subgenre of hip-hop known for its high-tempo beats and explicit content.
