
BIOGRAPHY
The group was formed in Oakland, California, in 1986, and its original members were brothers D'Wayne Wiggins (guitar) and Raphael Saadiq (bass, vocals), along with their cousin Timothy Christian Riley (drums). They chose the name Tony! Toni! Toné! as an homage to their inspiration, the soul artist Tony Toni Tone.
Tony! Toni! Toné! made their debut in 1988 with the album "Who?," which showcased their innovative approach to R&B. The album featured the hit single "Little Walter," which gained attention for its fusion of traditional R&B with new jack swing influences.
In 1989, the group released their breakthrough album, "The Revival," which included the hit singles "Feels Good" and "Whatever You Want." These tracks became signature songs for the group and helped establish them as leading figures in the R&B and new jack swing movements.
The momentum continued with their third album, "Sons of Soul" (1993), which further solidified their reputation. The album featured hits like "If I Had No Loot," "Anniversary," and "Leavin'." "Anniversary" became one of their most enduring and celebrated songs, showcasing their ability to create timeless R&B ballads.
Throughout their career, Tony! Toni! Toné! showcased versatility in their music, drawing from influences such as classic soul, funk, and blues. Their sound resonated with a broad audience, and they became known for their smooth harmonies, catchy melodies, and inventive production.
After "Sons of Soul," the group members pursued individual projects. Raphael Saadiq, in particular, achieved success as a solo artist and producer. Despite occasional reunions and collaborations, the group did not release another studio album after the 1990s.
