Raphael Saadiq was born Charles Ray Wiggins on May 14, 1966, in Oakland, California. He grew up in a musically inclined family and began his career in the late 1980s as a member of the R&B and soul trio Tony! Toni! Toné! The group, consisting of Saadiq and his brother D'wayne Wiggins, along with cousin Timothy Christian Riley, achieved significant success.
Tony! Toni! Toné! released their debut album, "Who?", in 1988, which featured hits like "Little Walter" and "For the Love of You." The group's follow-up albums, "The Revival" (1990) and "Sons of Soul" (1993), further solidified their status in the R&B scene. Saadiq's songwriting, production, and musical versatility played a crucial role in the group's success.
