BIOGRAPHY
The Ohio Players originated in Dayton, Ohio, in the early 1960s. The original lineup included musicians such as Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner (guitar, vocals), Marshall "Rock" Jones (bass), Clarence "Satch" Satchell (saxophone, guitar), Ralph "Pee Wee" Middlebrooks (trumpet, trombone), James "Diamond" Williams (drums), and Billy Beck (keyboard).
In the early years, the Ohio Players went through various name changes, including the Ohio Untouchables. They gained attention in the Dayton music scene and eventually signed with Westbound Records in the late 1960s. The band's early recordings included funk and soul influences.
The Ohio Players' breakthrough came in the early 1970s when they signed with Mercury Records. Their sound evolved into a distinctive blend of funk, soul, and R&B, characterized by tight horn arrangements, infectious rhythms, and sultry vocals. The band's stage presence was known for its flamboyance and energetic performances.
One of their early hits was "Funky Worm" (1972), featuring the distinctive sound of the ARP synthesizer played by Walter "Junie" Morrison. The success of this single paved the way for a series of hit albums and songs.
In 1974, the Ohio Players released the album "Skin Tight," which included the title track as well as the hit "Jive Turkey." The following year, they achieved massive success with the album "Fire," featuring the chart-topping singles "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster."
The Ohio Players continued to release successful albums, including "Honey" (1975) and "Contradiction" (1976). Their music often explored themes of sensuality and romance, and their album covers reflected the same themes.
In the late 1970s, the band faced internal conflicts and lineup changes. Despite these challenges, the Ohio Players continued to release albums and tour. The group disbanded in the early 1980s, but their music remains influential, and their contributions to the funk and R&B genres are celebrated.
