Atlantic Starr was formed in White Plains, New York, in 1976. The founding members included three brothers: David, Wayne, and Jonathan Lewis. The band's original lineup also featured lead singer Sharon Bryant, trumpeter William Sudderth, and saxophonist Damon Rentie.

In the early years, Atlantic Starr primarily played a mix of R&B, funk, and soul. They released their self-titled debut album in 1978, which featured the single "Stand Up," gaining attention in the R&B music scene. However, it was with their fourth album, "Radiant" (1980), that the band started to gain mainstream success.

The breakthrough for Atlantic Starr came with the release of the album "Always" in 1987. The title track, "Always," became one of their most iconic songs and a major hit. The ballad showcased the band's ability to create timeless and romantic music, earning them widespread acclaim.
